Naomi & I began our missions career in June of 1993 when we answered God’s call and were sent by our home church, Faith Mennonite Fellowship, Denver PA, to Grenada, West Indies with OBMM. Our mission assignment was to serve as the missionary pastor at the Limes Mennonite Church. From the very beginning our commitment was to stay with the Limes church until it was established in native Grenadian leadership.

After 9 years of service the Lord granted that gift and He raised up a native Grenadian brother as the pastor of the Limes church. In the progression of the Limes church being established in native leadership we adamantly observed the great evangelistic advantage and a new level of growth and maturity within the Limes church. My personal vision for indigenous church leadership and evangelistic propagation was deeply established at that time. In the 12 ½ years total that we served in Grenada we also had the privilege and joy of seeming the second church established at Laura as well as the third church planted at Laborie.

One of the deepest sorrows took place when we lost our native pastor at sea, June 2003, and for some time thereafter the Limes church struggled and its stability and growth floundered. But in all of this we choose not to question the Lord’s sovereign design and wisdom.

It was at about the same time (early 2003) that the Lord granted unto us an expanded vision to commence a new discipleship teaching ministry, focusing on equipping and discipling of native Brother’s wherever the Lord opens doors by invitation. This new ministry would be focused on teaching indigenous principles in equipping native leaders to reach their own unreached lost souls in an evangelistic effort as well as church planting among the least reached peoples of the world. In the process of time (5 years) this expanded vision evolved into what is presently Macedonian Teaching Ministry (MTM) based in SE Asia where 97% of the world’s unreached people groups are located.

What a great privilege and opportunity was the Burkholder’s to return to Grenada, West Indies, December 11-18, 2016 and teach at the Grenada Mennonite Churches bi-annual Grenada Bible Conference (GBC), after being gone for a sum of 11 years. I had the joy and privilege of teaching the MTM Biblical indigenous principles to the same three churches where we afore time had served as missionaries. This truly was monumental and a great joy for a career missionary to make a full circle in mission’s vision. Blessed Be God!

May the Lord richly bless and prosper OBMM and the present missionaries as they diligently labor and strive to raise up leaders in building God’s Kingdom in Grenada.

This region of India is strategically situated right between Nepal and Bhutan. Our native MTM coordinator is projecting 150 youth from the countries of India, Nepal & Bhutan. Brother Keshab first attended a MTM leadership conference in 2009. Today Keshab is an MTM alumni of no less than 7 different MTM conferences in the past 8 years. Today Pastor Keshab is evangelizing and planting churches in the most remote Himalayan regions of the world in north western Nepal where there are multitudes of gospel unreached villages. Not only is he evangelizing among the unreached but he is also making disciples of leadership among his own people as did Jesus, Barnabas & Paul.

The School of Mission was our introduction to Southeast Asian culture. Asia Soul Winners is headquartered in the city of Dimapur, India, a city of three hundred thousand in Nagaland, in Northeast India. Dimapur is a typical Indian city, throbbing with the vehicles, fumes, and dust of the commerce that supports this region. Tucked away on a hillside along a tree-lined, cobbled lane is the Centre For Asian Cross-Cultural Missions, a three-story, partially-finished building, but completed enough to host the School of Mission. Dorms on the second and third floors were bare rooms with concrete floors on which the students spread their blankets.

Restrooms are unfinished, so students used temporary facilities nearby. Meals were provided a short walk away, at the location at which the MTM team stayed in a private house. The students, representing various different NE India tribes, arrived primarily from the neighboring states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. We were, in the words of ASW director G. Khing, “Focusing on the focused.” That is, providing an opportunity for a group of committed workers who otherwise would have limited training available.

Raymond and Naomi Burkholder and Merle and Judy Flory began the term, with Paul and Barbara Ann Miller joining them after the first week. Raymond taught a course on “World Evangelism,” a study of the Book of Acts, chapters 1-13, focusing on the emergence of the Church in Antioch as the first missionary sending church, under the leadership of Barnabas. While many of our young students are already active pastors and evangelists, this teaching helped them develop a theological understanding of the biblical basis for missions, and provided renewed inspiration and vision for their evangelistic labors among the unreached people groups in their areas of ministry.

Merle Flory taught the students “The History of Missions,” detailing how other missionaries have tread this path in years gone by, taking a charitable but realistic look at the things that went well and not so well, and what we might learn from their experiences. Lessons were offered in Kingdom theology and practice, and family life for those in ministry, working to shore up areas of historic and cultural weakness for missionaries.

During the second week, Paul A Miller began teaching on “Servant Leadership,” a series of lessons about first learning to lead yourself, in preparation to lead others. In the concluding days, Raymond and Paul in a team effort provided an overview of Paul’s Missionary Journeys to round out the Book of Acts teaching, emphasizing to these current day missionaries how in time the Apostles obeyed the Great Commission Jesus gave them, carrying the gospel far beyond Judea and Samaria, to the “ends of the earth.”

Graduation exercises were held on Friday morning, coordinated by G. Khing, the director of Asia Soul Winners, and attended by numerous Dimapur pastors and other supporters. As the director of MTM, Raymond Burkholder gave the commencement address on “Three sending Truths”, focusing on the call, the commission, and the cost. At the end of the message the students responded to the call by kneeling in front as the pastors prayed, “sending” them forth into ministry in their respective home areas. As evening fell, the students and teachers gathered around a bonfire for a time of singing and rejoicing for all the Lord had done during this School of Mission.

So three weeks of teaching was completed, commitments made, prayers prayed, and laborers in God’s Kingdom returned to the fields white unto harvest. Many of these pastors and evangelists went home to Hindu towns and remote villages where no one heard the name of Christ until their arrival to continue the harvest of souls. Only God knows the impact upon their lives of these three weeks of study, and the eternal difference it makes. The planting has been done in the hearts of these Naga students. The watering continues throughout the Hindu towns and villages of Northeast India. And God gives the increase. 1 Cor 3:6.

One evening during the conference, the team was invited into a local home that had recently been newly constructed.  Two years ago, this same family had provided a warm welcome into their mud, two-room home in which they then lived; this year they opened their new brick-and-mortar home (now elevated above flood danger) and wanted prayer for cleansing and dedication of the house, which was readily granted.  They insisted that they want to make this evening meal and fellowship time a regular part of future conferences in this area!

The day following the conference, the team was asked to dedicate a church in a remote location about an hour’s drive from Dhangadhi.  This church is one of five recent church plants from the hosting church of the conference two years ago.  At the dedication service on Friday, this new church unveiled their name and revealed their new pastor.  Try to imagine the delight of the team when it was discovered that the new pastor was actually one of the converts from the conference in 2014 and a recent attendee of the Himalayan Bible School – both sponsored by MTM!  After assisting with the ordination service, the team was then unexpectedly introduced to two new converts who had just made their decisions to follow Christ at the conference concluded the previous day!  This entire experience was extremely fulfilling and enriching, and it portrays so well what God is doing with the church in the nation of Nepal.  The gates of hell are most certainly not prevailing against the church here, as Jesus, a wise master-builder, is raising up a church in testimony to His grace and faithfulness in this remote area.  May all glory be to Jesus!

….”Don’t Mention the Name of Jesus”!

It’s hard to describe the sad hopeless look we saw on the people’s faces when we arrived at Kathmandu, Nepal on October 5 to help with MTM seminars in eastern Nepal.  The gloomy, trashy conditions and oppressive spirit spoke of the country’s great need for the gospel.

An evil fifteen day Hindu festival was in progress when we arrived with Raymond & Naomi Burkholder on Sunday, Oct.  9, for our first seminar in very remote poor village named Karsiya in the Morang district near Biratnager, Nepal. It was a joy to meet fellow believers worshiping the real God of this world in the midst of an ungodly worldly festival. Their church building was less than a year old and very nice. Two hundred fifty to three hundred people counting children were attending. More children were present than usual because of the festival.

The people were sitting on the floor singing and praising the Lord with the joy of Jesus beaming on their faces. With rapt attention they followed Bro. Raymond’s teaching on “The Greater Works of the Holy Spirit” and my teaching from “The Beatitudes”.  Taking notes and listening intently, these brothers and sisters displayed a deep longing for sound Biblical teaching. They have had little exposure to “whole gospel” teaching. It was exciting to teach them and to be inspired by them too.

All to soon our three days were over. Their word to us was; “we feel like a baby just birthed and now we need you to stay and nurture us on”. It was a privilege to be part of this teaching ministry. The local planning committee worked hard to coordinate the event.

After a six hour ride over Nepal style roads we arrived at the second location in Chandrapur. We found the same eager, joyful faces and worshiping hearts. Again there were two hundred fifty to three hundred people in attendance. There were fewer children at this conference. This house of The LORD is located close to a Mosque. To see the name of Jesus be proclaimed right in the midst of a M_sl_m community was awesome.

The people sat on the floor for hours in a crowded, hot, stuffy room and drank from the rich living word. “The Beatitudes” were taught again and Bro. Raymond taught on “The Cry of Ishmael”, a call to evangelize the M_sl_m world. This teaching was greatly appreciated. Their attention was amazing.

In one of Raymond’s session when he began talking about Jesus an evil spirit cried out; “don’t mention Jesus, don’t say the name of Jesus”. The church immediately began rebuking this evil manifestation in the name of Jesus. And it became silent. GLORY! Jesus is LORD! Our hearts were inspired by how they knew what to do, to stand against the Evil One.

The time to leave came too soon. They wanted us to stay longer so we could teach more truths to them. Many books were picked up from the table – books from FLM and others, translated into their language. The hunger to learn is in their hearts! At both places, there were those who traveled six hours or more to come. They sacrifice so much to dine at Jesus’ table.  May our pilgrims grow onward and upward as they seriously study His word. The Church is alive!

It was a joy to help MTM carry on the vision of reaching this part of the world with sound Biblical teaching.  The cry of the pastors is PLEASE COME AND TEACH US!!   Who will answer the cry? Will you?

Our zeal to hold high the heritage we have been blest with was fueled. May we faithfully hold to the teachings we have known and carry the torch forward as we go. Thank you, Jesus, !!

South of the smoke rising from the burning bodies on the funeral pyres along the Pashupati Temple, and beyond the murky Bagmati River carrying the sooty ashes of the dead, a footpath winds its way back to a small Nepali village. Outside a crude house, a sari-clad woman rings a brass bell to awaken her gods. The glow of the burning candles and incense illuminates a face hardened from the bitterness of life. A shaky, gnarled hand tosses ashes into the air to appease her gods.

On the other side of the wall, the passionate words of the song “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back,” float through the open door and windows of a small, tin-roofed chapel. Approximately 40 pairs of flip flops stand in neat lines outside the door. Three dozen students from across Nepal, sit cross-legged on the chapel floor. Clapping and swaying with the music, they sing with a heart-felt passion that understands the cost of following Jesus in a culture that has been predominately Hindu since before the time of Christ. “My parents will disown me if I don’t marry a Hindu girl,” one youth shares….

We had four wonderful days of teaching from God’s Word and up building of our hearts by the Holy Spirit!  Each day was scheduled with two teaching sessions in the morning and two in the afternoon.  Brother Merle broke words of Life to us in his instruction on Having a Fruitful Ministry, and Abiding in Christ – John 15. This is only obtained through our Relationship with God, Relationship with Others, and our Relationship with the World. We remain separate from the world, yet go INTO it to reach men for Christ. (Of course, Merle’s power points and visual aids are a great help!) Brother Dale shared several attributes of God to help us know our Father better. God is Living, Eternal, and is Complete in Presence, Power, Knowledge, Grace, and Holiness. He finished with encouraging us to keep our Focus on Jesus.

As the pastors and students would sing or read scripture in their native tongue it was inspiring and very touching to our hearts. Some songs we were able to all sing together. Amazing Grace knows no cultural barriers! They read the scripture with great enthusiasm! It was a joy to experience their worship regardless of the heat, rain, or their fragile surrounding conditions. Their enthusiasm comes from the fact that Jesus Christ is the greatest JOY they have! It just reinforces our awareness that true worship is from the heart regardless our circumstances.

Judy and Marcia were a blessing to the girl students as they interacted together. They encouraged and built each other up, making lasting friendships!

Each Pastor and Student we met – from elderly men pastoring for over forty years to the youngest bright-eyed fourteen year old student – seemed a living example of humility and service. How cross-cultural the teaching has been as we’ve seen their cheerful acceptance of crowded living conditions among the younger, and the open-hearted sharing among the older pastors throughout the week! There is much diligent learning and quiet contentment, as these brethren seek to effectively reach others for Christ, deepen the message they carry, and fellowship with each other in their time spent together. True Christians everywhere are One in Christ. How Beautiful are the Feet of Them which spread the Gospel of Peace!

A Collective Reflection on the MTM conference: It was a time of renewing my commitment to God and to the work He has called me to do. The teaching on relationship with God, with others and with the world was so much a blessing to us that I wish it can be spread all over Myanmar within this year. And Pastor Dale’s teaching on the holiness of God and the grace of God was so profound that it has called us for personal sanctification. Personally, I am in love with you guys. You are like a firehouse and your presence brought me a strength I needed for the ministry.

Under Bro. Raymond Burkholder’s direction, we connected with a local Indian pastor, Benjamin Wadekar who has oversight of 44 small churches and pastors throughout the state of Maharashtra.  Most of the people of this state are Hindu, less than 1% are Christian, and even less than that know what it means to be born again and to live by the teachings of the New Testament.

Benjamin is 42 years old and is following in the footsteps of his father (deceased) and mother (still living).  They came to Christ in a miraculous way many years ago and have been persecuted for their faith by their relatives and neighbors ever since.

Pastor Benjamin has never before partnered with anyone like MTM and he and his fellow pastors soaked up the teaching like a sponge.  So much of their vision reminds me of the values we espouse as biblical Mennonites.  Things like preferring tent-making pastors in plural ministry instead of living off the people and/or being so position-conscious.  Also in seeking out, solid biblical, yet practical training and input rather than pursuing seminary-type of educational experiences.

And while Benjamin is a new contact for Bro. Raymond, Raymond has been blessed by the way in which he has never asked for money in facilitating this conference endeavor.  Yet he and his family live very poorly and many of the pastors and churches he oversees live very poorly themselves.  They do not own their own homes and in renting they are required by the government to move every eleven months.  This makes it very difficult for strong, stable family and church environments to be established.  Most know nothing of their own transportation and either walk or need to hire a taxi for longer distances.  Benjamin himself sold the small motorcycle he had in order to buy food for the conferences.  A couple of his fellow pastors have been able to acquire little tricycle rickshaws which they use for hire to make some money to support themselves.

Bro. Raymond taught from his well-prepared, well-delivered library of PowerPoint presentations!  He operates in the sweet spot of his full gifting and connects very well with his audiences!  I have come to believe that the Macedonian Teaching Ministry (MTM) is one of the worthiest ministries among third-world cultures today.

An added bonus for these particular conferences in Mumbai was that one of the IGo student ministry teams were also able to partner with us.  Six young people, including one young married couple, did excellent ministry with the children of these communities.  Bradlyn Wadel was the team leader, Jesse & Margaret Slabaugh, Wendell Hochstedler, Kimberly Good, and Jenise Ropp made up the rest of the team.  They also ministered well in the conference context with special four-part harmony singing, and praying over people who came forward for special prayer.

I personally did teaching on marriage and family and used my recently published book, The Way of a Bride with Her Groom, as a bit of a textbook.  It was huge surprise to me how voraciously they devoured the input and even more so when the Pastor Benjamin began inquiring about getting the book translated into five of the over fifty languages in India, including Hindi which is the national language.

The post MTM To The Dalits Of Mumbai, INDIA appeared first on Macedonian Teaching Ministry.

The conference was conducted at Prayer Mountain which is a beautiful “Church Camp” retreat type facility but it is not situated on a mountain. The region is basically a desert region located mid-ship between Alexandria & Cairo. There was an attendance total of 123 which most were couples and approximately 30 were pastors & their wives. There were also many young brothers & sisters and emerging leaders.

It has been a great joy for me in the beautiful relationships that have been established with this dear group of Egyptian leaders over the years. They requested that Naomi & I come alone and I do all the preaching which we accepted. This ended up being a real ministry marathon for me with 10 messages in 4 days. God’s grace was sufficient but needless to say I was exhausted after it was all completed.

Over and over we heard testimonies that Kingdom theology teaching is new to the churches in Egypt. A few of the subjects that were preached and taught were, The Biblical Centrality of the Kingdom, The Kingdom of Peace, The Kingdom Treasure, Kingdom One-anothering, The Two Kingdoms, The Kingdom Prayer & The Kingdom Power. One older brother told me that he has not heard Kingdom of God teaching in 20 years. Another brother said that even in their Bible colleges and seminaries the Kingdom of God is not really taught.

In all the travels and preaching opportunities that God has granted me…the most exciting times are when God comes and moves mightily among His people. This happened twice at this conference towards the end. After the preaching was finished there was a spontaneous response (not at all an altar call) of much prayer where they came together in small groups of prayer, others kneeling and on their face in prayer, some were mourning & weeping, confessing one to another and still others coming to the front and packing out the altar…AND THIS WENT ON FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR AFTER THE MESSAGE, well into the night! In all of my preaching in many different countries and meetings I do not recall something like this. It was overwhelmingly obvious that God had come by His Spirit and was doing a deep work in the hearts of His people. Blessed Be God Alone!!! May these sweet visitations of God inspire God’s people to advance God’s Kingdom in the land of the sons of Ishmael.

The Vadlamanu, India Conference Group

Merle’s sessions were on John 15, our relationship with God, with each other, and with the world, illustrated by the vine and the branches.  (A fruitful ministry) Supported by our teachings of the sufficiency of Jesus and the assurance we have in Him and His Word, such as the doubts and fears we may have and the brokenness, usefulness, and security we have in the hand of Jesus.  The blessing also of seeing the preeminent Jesus followed by some precious possessions given to us, then teaching on husband/wife, family, and our common church family relationships, also our Holy Spirit gifting.  All teachings were to support and edify each other, to go, reach, and teach an unreached world for Jesus. There was much testimony to the teaching by the gentle nodding of heads in agreement, some even before Pastor Joseph so ably translated for us.  Those attending were first generation believers, all with a common focus and interest to know more of God through Jesus Christ and HIS Word.

1Tim. 3:1 This is a true saying, if a man desires the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. Seventeen men of God, appointed by their church to minister, desired the office of bishop.  Scriptural teaching, support, and prayers were offered by several.  These godly men were anointed with oil by one of their own India bishops.  The word and work of spreading the gospel multiplies!!  Seventeen godly men were ordained and over 100 attendees were given a certificate of attendance.  A portion of Matt 28: 18 & 19 was fulfilled.  (Go ye….) We were blessed to visit and minister to a leper camp by giving surplus supplies from our four-day conference.  A large bag of potatoes, a large bag of onions, and rice (50# ea.?) was received with thanksgiving.  After sharing a brief message of praise and encouragement and hearing many hallelujahs we were awed again by radiant smiles and eyes because of the connection/fellowship we have in Jesus.  Praise Him!!

After traveling all night from Chiang Mai, Thailand to Vijayawada, India this dear brother Joseph Raju was a very dear sight to behold.  Joseph served as our host, coordinator, and translator all the way through.  He was also the conference facilitator.  Thank you so much, Pastor Joseph.  May God receive the glory for your hospitality to us.

A very important principle from my perspective was and is that these opportunities to minister are not sacrifices, they are blessings! This is my wife’s perspective: The conference was a real blessing in my life.  To see brethren and sisters in the Lord in a completely different setting than we in America are used to.  As we traveled to and from the conference we saw very sober, unsmiling faces on people that worship the Hindu gods.  In comparison we worshiped Jesus with a very happy people that have been in the Hindu worship but now know Jesus as their Savior!!  The relationship we have with Jesus makes us shine from the inside out no matter where in this world the Lord has placed us, from the wealth of America to the poverty of a leper camp. Thank you, Merle and Judy, for the invitation to minister.  Thank You to all for your prayer support and to our Maple Grove church family for your generous monetary support for this conference.
