South of the smoke rising from the burning bodies on the funeral pyres along the Pashupati Temple, and beyond the murky Bagmati River carrying the sooty ashes of the dead, a footpath winds its way back to a small Nepali village. Outside a crude house, a sari-clad woman rings a brass bell to awaken her gods. The glow of the burning candles and incense illuminates a face hardened from the bitterness of life. A shaky, gnarled hand tosses ashes into the air to appease her gods.
On the other side of the wall, the passionate words of the song “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back,” float through the open door and windows of a small, tin-roofed chapel. Approximately 40 pairs of flip flops stand in neat lines outside the door. Three dozen students from across Nepal, sit cross-legged on the chapel floor. Clapping and swaying with the music, they sing with a heart-felt passion that understands the cost of following Jesus in a culture that has been predominately Hindu since before the time of Christ. “My parents will disown me if I don’t marry a Hindu girl,” one youth shares….
