In the time following that visit my pain levels continued to increase, and walking became increasingly more difficult and especially on uneven surfaces and going steps. In early 2020 we had a ministry trip planned to America with a very busy ministry schedule planned. Upon arrival in America the end of February within weeks COVID-19 hit and our full ministry schedule was eventually cancelled. We recognized that the MTM ministry work will be on hold for a long while. The pain & degeneration continued to increase here in America and in a noticeably short period of time my walking was majorly compromised. 

Finally, in the beginning of July 2020 I went to see an orthopedic doctor here in America after it became clear it will be a very long time before we can return to Asia due to the pandemic. He also thoroughly investigated my knees with multitudes of x-rays and also confirmed my knees condition, but he used much stronger language. He said Mr. Burkholder your knees are shot!!! But he said you are very healthy otherwise and he suggested to do bilateral surgery which means doing both knees in the same surgery. But he informed me I will need to wait for 12 weeks before surgery can be performed.

In that 12 week waiting period both Naomi & I took up e-bicycling (e-bikes are battery powered assist bicycles). For Naomi it was post-surgery therapy and for me (Raymond) it was pre-surgery therapy. Over the course of the summer we rode our e-bicycles hundreds of miles.  

Finally, October 21^st, 2020 I was admitted at a local hospital (Ephrata WellSpan Hospitial) here in America for bilateral knee surgery. As they wheeled me into the Operating room, I was crying out to God I Corinthians 6 which tells us our bodies are not our own, v-19…
     1. Our bodies belong to the Lord; v-13
     2. Our bodies are the members of Christ v-15 (therefore my knees are Christ’s members). 
     3. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost; v-19 
v-20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your Spirit which are God’s. 
Actually my prayer was scriptural and in plain words, Lord help yourself to your own purchased prize possession for a successful surgery and a speedy successful full recovery! AND BLESSED BE GOD. HE HAS HONORED THAT REQUEST AND TODAY I AM GIVING HIM ALL THE GLORY!!!

Greetings to each of you in the name of Jesus Christ, who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

“Pastor:

• Would you please come back next year? 
• Do you know the things you have taught us are totally new to us? 
• What will happen to our forefathers who never heard these truths?
• Can we have copies of these messages to take to the next village? 
• Can you please bring a mission’s conference to our area?
• Can you teach us on the Godly home and child training?
• Would you be able to bring English Bibles when you come for our students?
• Would you come and conduct a whole church conference?

These are just a few of the questions that make it difficult for us to say “farewell” after 7 years of following the Lord Jesus through South East (SE) Asia on the Macedonian Teaching Ministry trail. Judy and I thank God for His abundant grace to us through SO MANY of you during our time with MTM. We always knew that since the call was clear to go, we had nothing to fear about going.  By God’s grace and your prayerful support, we always found that to be true. HALLELUJAH!!

Brother Raymond Burkholder told me when I came on as an assistant in 2013, “at MTM, we never know what is happening when it is happening, or if it is happening”!  We not only found that to be true on the MTM trail, but we have also found it to be true here in the USA after Covid-19 appeared.

What started as a guest teacher invitation to a MTM conference in June of 2012 in the country of Nepal, extended into relocating to Thailand, and conducting numerous Pastoral Leadership Conferences in 9 different countries in SE Asia.  October 2020 marked our 7^th year of serving God among the Nations with the Macedonian Teaching Ministry, located in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

After diligently seeking God for direction about His will concerning our future in SE Asia, it came very clear to us in January of this year that we were being called to return to the USA. Our plan was to finish up all our scheduled 2020 MTM conferences, and then return to ministering at our supporting home church in Ellensburg, Washington, sometime in January 2021. In March of this year we returned to the USA for what we thought was going to be the summer, and due to the Covid-19 situation, were not able to get a return visa to Thailand. That meant our remaining MTM conferences were cancelled, and our house would need to be emptied out by someone else.  Currently, Rod and Janelle Musser from IGo are faithfully packing for us, room by room.  Judy and I are eternally grateful to God, MTM, IGo, our supporting church, guest teachers, faithful donors, encouragers, and prayer warriors…who have made possible this blessed, glorious gospel experience!  We are especially grateful to Brother Raymond and Sister Naomi Burkholder for this opportunity with MTM.  Only eternity will reveal how their investment in us has impacted our lives and the lives of those we had the opportunity to serve. Our testimony is this:  God is faithful, Christ is worthy, and we learned more than we taught! To God be the glory, great things He hath done!  “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Greetings in the precious name of our Lord Jesus from Rich and Nicole Moore. We live in the beautiful Willamette Valley near Dallas, Oregon and are the parents of three wonderful children; daughter, Shanae (married to Landon Kelley) and sons, Hayden and Trevin. Operating a construction business using tools like this form 1098 t generator, tending a small hazelnut orchard, and ministering to our local German Baptist Brethren church congregation are all a blessing for our family. Rich also serves on the board of the Rock of Ages Mennonite Home. Serving as a guest teacher for an MTM conference in SE Asia a couple years ago blessed us…inspired us and revealed to us how our amazing God is at work among the nations and among us. We look forward to allowing God to use us to help facilitate future MTM conferences when He allows it to be.

But there was a part that MTM continued to play from our office in America. That was to be a catalyst or a go-between. It has been a great joy and privilege to serve our dear native Christian brothers in India by serving them with financial help through Christian Aid Ministries (CAM). Please enjoy the following testimony and photos from Odisha state of India. MTM has been partnering with brother Binay Bardham for the past 12 years in hosting Bible Conferences and Bible schools.

“The COVID-19 infection is growing fast at an exponential rate across the world. The pandemic is also spreading rapidly in India despite the necessary measures adopted by the state and central government to curb the spread of COVID-19, but there is no respite as such. The global and national spread on a daily basis are very scary and alarming. The effect of community at large is very painful and heart breaking.  This has a profound impact on every class of society but the most affected are the poor.

In response to this pandemic, VSSA (India Ministry Name) with the help and support of CAM came forward to reach out to the poor and marginalised, daily wage labourers, rickshaw pullers, venders as well as Pastors, Evangelists who are struggling to feed themselves with no earning options.
We sincerely would like to express our gratitude for the generous and sacrificial donations and earnest prayer which enable VSSA to meet the food and safety needs of needy families in this crisis time.
In the first phase, we could able to distribute 40 relief kit in Bhubaneswar, Khordha, and Nayagarh

It is unsure at this time when MTM will be able to resume operations in Asia. However, this has given MTM the opportunity to do teaching and PR work throughout the USA, including the states of Washington, Oregon, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Ohio.

MTM TEAM UPDATE

The full MTM team was able to depart from Thailand within the month of March just ahead of the global COVID-19 pandemic and presently we are all very well and in America. Please read on to see a short description of what we are all working for the Lord in America. 

Raymond & Naomi Burkholder (Director)

Presently the Burkholder’s are at home in Akron, PA, USA, and are well blessed in Jesus’ Name. Thank you to all who have been messaging us from many different parts of the world inquiring how we are doing and if we are well and safe. Please be assured both Raymond & Naomi are well and safe in the Lord’s protection. Blessed be God! Be sure to read and study the message that follows. Since all of our preaching and MTM public relations assignments have been canceled in America & Canada, Pastor Raymond is doing some personal testimonial writings for future publications. He is also laboring in the Word of God for future preaching & teaching. Mrs. Naomi is doing personal sewing as well as sewing COVID-19 face masks for a local ministry for distribution in NYC.

Because of returning to the USA early this Spring, I, Merle, was able to attend the Minister’s Conference held by our national brotherhood in Indiana.  I thank God for the faithful men He has allowed me to fellowship with on both sides of the world. 

Sitting at my desk in Ellensburg, Washington during the days of social distancing, has been a most welcome treat that I have received with thanksgiving.   Studying God’s Word, cleaning up files, organizing, preparing messages, and bonding with the heart of my wife as well as our dear supporting church family is all part of my daily experience. 

My dear wife, Judy, is enjoying many quiet reflections of the faithfulness of God as well as learning to trust His direction for the future. She is enjoying staying in contact with her SE Asian acquaintances, as well as catching up with our local church congregation. One of her many delights is to get back into a real kitchen and grind grain, bake bread, and supply our table with various other favorite western entrees.  One special highlight of hers is taking a walk together each day, breathing in the cool, crisp, refreshing air of the Pacific Northwest!

What a joy to be in America with friends and family and to reconnect with individuals from my home church. I returned the beginning of March for my annual furlough to the states. However, this happened to be just before the virus really took off here in America, therefore I have not had the chance to really connect with my church yet. It may also delay my return to Thailand. Being an online college student takes about half of my time and the other half I spend working for my Dad, doing drywall remodel jobs.

How can we be the salt of the earth and the light of the world in the midst of a world of global calamity – how can we be blameless and harmless, the sons of God without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.

Feb. 18-22, 2020

Egypt is famous for its ancient monuments such as the Pyramids and the Sphinx.   It is also home to one of the oldest civilizations on earth. The land of Goshen, is the rich black soil along the Nile river, now referred to as the Delta region, was home to the children of Israel for 400 years at the time of Joseph and his 11 brothers.  The Nile River is the life source of Egypt, being very rich in Bible history and is a very interesting country.

Egypt has a population of over 102 million people, with 85% being Muslim, it is the mind of global Islam. Because of the possibility of Islamic opposition, the conference was held twenty-five miles northeast of Cairo, at a government-protected compound in the desert. Eighteen different denominations from the four corners of Egypt, and one brother from South Sudan, attended the conference. There were 128 attendees which included doctors, attorneys, professors, English Bible college students (from Xplore Nations Bible College, Cairo) along with pastors and teachers came together for the conference.   What a privilege to be a part of the work!

The highlight of the conference was Friday evening when brother Raymond gave the invitation to take up the challenge to be filled with the River of Water of Life and go out from the conference inspired to reach their own unreached people groups. There were approximately fifteen responded to the call to recommit their lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  
 Let us be faithful to pray for the church of Jesus Christ in Egypt as they reach out to minister to their own unreached people group.   

Editor’s Note; The above article was written by Lynford Miller. Lynford and his wife Sue are from Eureka Nevada and attend Diamond Valley Mennonite Church. They have five children, one son four daughters. The youngest (Angie) plans to attend IGo in September. 20 years ago their family served in Belize Central America for a short time and it was during that time that they adopted their youngest daughter Angie. In 2008 they were in Bangladesh for three months as house parents for CAM. They were building homes after cyclone Sidr had hit the southern coast of Bangladesh and destroyed or damaged a million homes. Lynford has been to Liberia, Romania, and Jamaica on mission projects but what’s more important to him is the times he could be an Aaron and a Herr in lifting up the arms of others who could go.   One of my daughters has spent time in Nicaragua under Olive Branch and another daughter spent a number of years in Bangladesh in the teaching ministry.  MTM is grateful to Lynford Miller and Nevin Good for assisting in the work of furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ. How do you describe the work of Loving Father, Gentle Saviour, and Mighty Rushing Wind Holy Spirit?  I’m not sure it is possible.  These were the highlights of one week in Myanmar.  Seven days, Four church services, Two conferences.  The Word of God opened and shared between multiple cultures in Five languages:  English, Lisu, Burmese, Hebrew, and Greek.  Continual prayer and constant worship bathed the settings of true worshipers, though we were always surrounded by Buddhist temples, Pagodas, and people.  Rice, chicken, fish, pork, and fruit at nearly every meal.  The only exception was breakfast, where we had rice, eggs, deep-fried “anything”, and fruit.

Monday morning arrived and the Leadership Conference began.  The theme was Servant Leadership and Origins of Music.  Some leaders use BIG sticks while others use the staff of a Shepherd.  By interesting comparison, we considered that God is Musical, and Lucifer is the second best.  True leaders are after the success of others while others are focused on being on top.  Likewise, God’s music is focused on growing our spirits while Lucifer’s music is focused on leading our flesh… and so went the next three days.  By the time the conference was complete, many testimonies were shared of commitments to change leadership styles and Lead by Serving as Jesus did!  Others shared they would now be praying over their music choices and testing the spirits to see whether they are of God.

Thursday morning began the Discipleship Conference next door to the first conference at a small campus called FTS – Faith Theological Seminary.  The coordinators and translators of the first conference are also the leaders and teachers of FTS.  In a much smaller and more personal setting, the cost of Discipleship was examined and considered seriously.  We also considered the two languages that music speaks: the language of Heart and the language of Spirit.  Just as we need to be intentional about Discipleship, so we need to be intentional about leading our hearts in our music choices.  God’s best in both areas produces an incredible life of abundance!  By the end of the second day, sober commitments were made as we considered the story and song: “I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back.”

We are giving God thanks for the Burmese and Lisu Christians, many of whom continue to pour out their lives in sacrifice to Jesus in astounding ways every day.  We also give God thanks that we were able to tell them of the prayer support from many Christians all over America.  Thank you, Jesus!

Recently, MTM had an invitation to facilitate a youth conference in a region of Indonesia that is in close proximity to where the Burkholder’s had lived for 6 months while serving as house parents & spiritual leaders with CAM in the tsunami rebuilding project back in 2006-2007. Back in the day we had lived and worked in Aceh on Sumatra island which is primarily an Islamic region since Indonesia is the largest Islamic population nation on the face of the planet.

It was while we lived in Aceh with the Acehnese people that God imparted a huge burden on my heart for the Muslim people of the world. So much so that as of today I have developed a complete series on teaching for the Christian Church in motivating them to reach their own Islamic people for Jesus Christ. This teaching is taken from the Scriptures in the book of Genesis and is entitled “The Cry of Ishmael”. Presently, MTM continues to receive requests from Islamic regions of the world to come and help the Christian church in those regions through this teaching to encourage their people in Islamic outreach for Jesus Christ. Blessed be God!

But to my dismay upon our arrival in North Sumatra province of Sumatra (which borders the Province of Aceh), a heavily Christian churched region of Indonesia, with Christian churches abounding most everywhere, the Bataknese people of this region who have had the Gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 100 years surrounded on all sides with Muslim lost souls & Muslim prayer calls abounding, 5 times a day. IT CERTAINLY APPEARS TO ME THERE IS LITTLE BURDEN TO BRING LIVING WATER TO THE CRYING OF ISHMAEL!

Nevertheless, it is in this context that MTM conducted a youth conference in inspiring these churched youth to Know Jesus Christ & to Make Him Known Unto their Own People. Perhaps the highlight of the conference was when approximately 10 of the conference attendee’s youth responded to give their hearts to Jesus Christ in a rebirth experience in the Living Water of Christ FIRST coming unto them. Blessed Be God! One soul coming to Jesus Christ makes it all worthwhile.

Another call for teaching among the nations was answered, and we were blessed to be a part of the work.  Over 150 attended the conferences, even exceeding the invitations, as others heard of the opportunity and wanted to come to hear the teaching.  It was inspiring to see their desire and attentiveness.  The topics were “Balancing Family and Ministry” and “The Power of the Word of God”.

Just like it was in Ezra’s day, the ears of the people were attentive to the Word of God.

As we were graciously hosted by several of the local pastors in their homes in the evenings after the sessions had ended, we heard about their lives, families, and ministries.  We also enjoyed the personal times of fellowship between sessions and during our eventful rides to and from the conferences.  Here are just a few examples:

• I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus

One of the brothers who was very helpful during one of the conferences, quietly and very soberly, shared the story behind his prominent scars.  He had been attacked by men from his village because of his faith in Jesus.  They cut his neck and wrist and stabbed him multiple times in the back and left him in the jungle (forest) as dead.  He was found by some women who went there to gather firewood.  He spent 2 years in bed recovering and nearly lost his legs because of the incident.  Today he lives in the city and is very helpful and energetic for the work of the kingdom.  He still travels a distance to his village every Sunday to worship there.

• Beauty for ashes

One pastor and his wife had their home and worship center destroyed by a hostile community who falsely accused them and would have killed them if the police had not arrived.  After losing everything, they have relocated and are building a church in a new place.  Their faces radiate the joy and faith that has brought them through many trials.

• Lifted from the miry clay and standing on the rock

One pastor has come to know the saving grace of Jesus after being in jail three times due to his life of sin.  After a life of alcoholism and murder, he is now preaching the faith he once despised.  

• The temple of the Holy Ghost

One older pastor, with a quiet, pleasant countenance, in broken English shared that he had come to know Jesus while he was a temple worker serving false gods in a city temple.  Now he has learned that he is the temple of the Holy Ghost.  His eyes danced with joy and he spoke quietly of salvation by Jesus!

Many of the pastors acknowledged that they have too often viewed the Bible through the lens of their culture, rather than confronting cultural errors through the lens of the Bible.  We share in Paul’s confidence in the Spirit of God both in our lives and theirs:

Pokhara Nepal

December 2 – 6, 2019

The first week of December is a time that will be remembered for quite some time. There were a number of things that impressed us. Quite a few of the pastors & emerging leaders traveled on a bus for three days to attend this training conference. Furthermore, they would sit on the hard floor all day (6 hours) attentively drinking in deeply and diligently taking notes in their spiral notebooks.

As Brother Raymond and Brother Tim ministered to this group of pastors and aspiring pastors, their hunger to learn more of God’s Word and apply these teachings to their lives was evident. Brother Raymond shared on Pastoral Care and Shepherding. Brother Tim shared some points on Leadership in General and also encouraged them to fight the good fight of faith, putting on the whole amour of God as in Ephesians chapter 6. The verse that came to mind as we observed their hunger and desire was, Matthew 5:6 which promises those that desire hunger and thirst after righteousness shall be filled. The spirit of God was very keenly felt throughout the week and at the closing of the last service, Brother Raymond gave an invitation for them to recommit their lives and their ministry to God anew. There was an overwhelming response as they knelt and prayed and shed tears and called out to God in commitment and prayer.

Our Prayers are with the Church in The Himalayan region of the world as it grows and as these native Pastors continue to shepherd their people and continue to spread the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Also, let us support MTM in prayer as they go and preach the all things of Jesus Christ.

Biratnagar Nepal

December 15 – 18, 2019

It was a special privilege to participate in the Pastoral Priorities Leadership Conference hosted by MTM and Pastor Eshaw as the native coordinator, in Dakuwa Danga village near Biratnagar, Nepal. 

We met in Pastor Eshaw’s church in a remote village setting.  Although in Nepal, we were close to the Indian border. Brother Raymond spoke on Pastoral Priorities. His first lesson, Knowing Christ, laid the foundation for the lessons that followed. I spoke on Words of Wisdom for Pastors taken from the book of II Timothy. Paul, in a prison cell awaiting death, was writing his last known words to his beloved son Timothy, instructing, warning and encouraging him.

  Some of the attendees were from India and the rest were from Nepal. Some had traveled for quite a distance in order to attend. It is indeed a precious opportunity to teach God’s Word to men who are in leadership or likely will be in leadership in the future. I am very thankful that the Word is for all cultures in all times.

There was good attention given, evidence of interest, and expressions of gratefulness, though teaching through an interpreter has challenges. The teachings were interpreted from English into Hindi. The response of the brothers to an invitation extended by Brother Raymond during one message to empty self in order to follow Jesus’ example of leadership was encouraging.

  It was a great blessing to learn that the location of the conference was in the midst of the unreached Madeshi people. We trust God that this conference will bear much fruit. Before coming to Nepal, God had reminded me of Isaiah 55:10, 11 that His Word will not return to Him void but will accomplish that which He pleases. Our desire is that God would use this conference to strengthen and encourage the believers to walk faithfully and to reach out to the many people in this area of the world who are walking in blindness.

Stephen Burkholder and Clinton Weaver provided vital support to us teachers and to the Conference itself. It certainly has been a blessing for me to learn to know these two brothers who are serving God in Nepal. 

I am grateful for the opportunity to serve with MTM in this manner. Focusing on those who are able to reach the people groups who know little about the Savior is a very important ministry and I thank God that He has called MTM into existence.
